150 Year Celebrations Categories: Documents, Leadership, Religious Orders, Schools Timelines: Historical Timeline

Thursday 9 September saw perfect weather dawn for the official celebrations of Catholic Education Day and the 50th Anniversary of Catholic Education and the Church in Western Australia.

This unique milestone in the history of the Church in WA commenced with a Thanksgiving Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral, Victoria Square, to celebrate the 150 years of Catholic Education. St Mary’s Cathedral stands just metres away from the site of the first Catholic church to be built in the Swan River colony in 1843, the pro-Cathedral, which now stands next to Mercedes Catholic College for girls.

The Mass was concelebrated by the Reverend Barry James Hickey, Archbishop of Perth, and priests of the diocese.

Mrs Therese Temby, the Director of Catholic Education Office of Western Australia, welcomed the official guests attending the Mass, including the Premier of Western Australia, Mr Richard Court, students and teachers representing schools throughout Perth and well wishers from the general community.
