JPC teacher fulfils lifelong dream to wear green and gold

11 June 2019

John Paul College Head of Health and Physical Education Judy Bailiff recently returned from representing Australia in over 55s masters hockey at the Trans-Tasman Challenge.

The three-match series against New Zealand was held at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre where the 2018 Commonwealth Games took place.

Mrs Bailiff said representing Australia was a great honour

“Wearing the Green and Gold has been an amazing experience and such a privilege,” she said.

“It has always been my ambition to represent my country and although I played in the reserves for Zimbabwe, many years ago, I never made it to the big time.

“So, it has been with my adopted country, that I was able to fulfil my dream.

The team comprising elite masters players from around the country, had just two training days to get to know each other.

“We went into the matches confident and full of drive,” Mrs Bailiff said.

“However, we lost the first match, which really gave us even more determination.

“Our second match we won and felt that we could beat the Kiwis one more time.

“New Zealand came out strong in our final match and with the likes of two ex-Black Sticks from the Olympics in 1984, we lost the final game.”

Mrs Bailiff said they may not have won the series, but it was such an incredible experience.

“The uniform, the tradition, the camaraderie, the prestige is just so uplifting, motivating and humbling,” she said.

“My advice to the youngsters of today – aim high and don’t give up, strive to reach your dreams.”
