In the Footsteps of Ursula: A Journey Through the Mercy Story

28 January 2025

To conclude the 2024 school year, St Jude’s Catholic Primary School staff embarked on a memorable journey through history and faith, celebrating the school’s shared Mercy charism.

Titled ‘In the Footsteps of Ursula’, the day was conceptualised by Vedette Lendich, Director of Faith & Mercy Charism at Mercedes College and facilitated by St Jude’s Assistant Principal, Graham Maher. This unique professional development opportunity allowed staff to walk, sail, and explore the significant locations tied to the story of the Sisters of Mercy and their mission in Western Australia.

The day began at the historic Bather’s Beach in Fremantle, where a moving liturgy set the tone for the staff’s journey. It was here that the Sisters of Mercy, led by Sr Ursula Frayne, first stepped onto Australian soil, bringing with them a spirit of compassion and service. Staff gathered in reverence, reflecting on this courageous beginning.

Following the liturgy, the group continued their journey to the place where the Mercy Sisters spent their first night in Australia. The atmosphere there, combined with shared stories, helped the group imagine the challenges and hopefulness of that momentous occasion.

From Fremantle, they travelled by boat along the Swan River to Perth, retracing part of Sr Ursula’s original journey to the Swan River Colony. During the trip, staff listened to a specially curated podcast detailing the lives and experiences of those who travelled alongside Sr Ursula. The storytelling brought to life the trials and triumphs of the early Mercy mission.

‘To physically go through the steps that Ursula stepped through made it very real. To know that the sisters walked and touched the places we went to, was quite inspiring.’

“We spent the day retracing the journey of Ursula Frayne, who made her way from Fremantle to Perth to settle the Mercy Sisters.

“It was a hot day, and as we explored the important landmarks, I couldn’t help but think about how tough it must have been for her, walking in full habit! We listened to recordings from her original diary at each stop, which really brought her experiences to life. It was fascinating to learn about her dedication and the challenges she faced. I loved the boat ride to the city because everyone was in such great high spirits, chatting and singing and having a great time.

“As we journeyed through Fremantle to Perth, we not only honoured Ursula Frayne’s legacy but also deepened our connection to the spirit of mercy that continues to guide us today.

“Feeling grateful for the opportunity to connect with such an inspiring figure and my wonderful colleagues!”

Arlene Dique, Administration Officer said:

“Personally, I found it to be an enriching pastoral day. Reflection and liturgy on the beach was just beautiful. The history of their footsteps was presented in a fun filled yet thought provoking manner and created a team spirit environment which meant working and taking care of each other were very enjoyable.”

Once in Perth, the group visited key historical locations, each steeped in the Mercy story. At every stop, they unpacked historical facts and immersed ourselves in the narratives shared through podcasts. The addition of props at designated stations brought a playful element to the day, as staff embraced the opportunity to dress up and capture group selfies, adding laughter and camaraderie to our exploration.

The day concluded at Mercedes College, a cornerstone of Mercy history in WA. Here, the group were warmly welcomed with light refreshments and the quintessential good cup of tea, a tradition rooted in Sr Catherine McAuley’s directive to her Sisters. This final gesture of hospitality was a fitting end to a day filled with reflection, connection, and inspiration.

Chantal Parry, St Jude’s Catholic Primary School teacher said:

“Sitting in a classroom and listening to the Mercy Charism history is one thing but experiencing it for yourself is another! Walking in the Footsteps of Ursula and travelling back in time was really special and gave us a deep connection with what the sisters encountered as they arrived in Perth.”

In the Footsteps of Ursula was not just a journey through the past but a powerful reminder of the Mercy values that continue to shape our mission at St Jude’s. Through this shared experience, staff deepened their understanding of our charism and strengthened their commitment to embodying the Mercy spirit in their roles.

Jonnda Simpson, St Jude’s Catholic Primary School Principal said:

“It was a truly unforgettable day, retracing the steps of Ursula Frayne through the historic heart of Fremantle and Perth. The Amazing Race-style quizzes brought the journey to life, adding an exciting twist to discovering these iconic locations.”

Looking to the future, this day will remain a cherished memory, reminding staff of the enduring legacy of Sr Ursula and the Sisters of Mercy – a legacy they proudly carry forward.
