Art, culture, history of Christianity explored by Kolbe students

16 June 2023

Understanding the history and culture of Christianity was the aim of a recent excursion for a group of Year 11 ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) Religion and Life students.  The Kolbe College students spent a day exploring various Christian churches and learning about variations between denominations.

The excursion began at the gothic-style St George’s Anglican Cathedral in Perth CBD. Students marveled at the beautiful architecture and were guided by Father Noah who explained the symbols represented in Cathedral.

Fr Noah then discussed the importance of ecumenism and the aim of the Anglican Church to provide a welcoming place for all people.

‘I really enjoyed how Fr Noah spoke about how the church keeps in contact with the other churches and are constant in bringing unity between them all. It shows that we can see beyond differences and reconcile,’ Ava said.

St Mary’s Cathedral was the next stop on the tour. Students learned about the progress of the building’s construction and renovation over the past 166 years. The mission of the Catholic Church was also incorporated during the visit.

Students then enjoyed a lunch break in Northbridge before moving on to their last destination at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Constantine and St Helen. Fr Terry walked them through the time of Jesus, the development of one holy and apostolic church and the events leading up to the Great Schism. Students were intrigued by the golden font used for the Baptism of infants and learned about the veneration of icons.

Upon arrival back at school, students took turns sharing  their learnings and experiences with the group.

‘I felt so grateful for everything they taught us. Their kindness and teachings have truly made me, and many others have a new appreciation for the church. I will remember this experience always and hope to share the knowledge I’ve received with my other peers and family,’ Rachael said.
