Art hat-trick a possibility at prestigious exhibition

04 July 2019

Artworks by students from CEWA schools and colleges will be showcased among the State’s best at the 17th annual St George’s Art Exhibition this month.

Held inside the historic St George’s Anglican Cathedral in the centre of Perth, it is Western’s Australia’s premier exhibition of works by senior high school students and will feature 170 art students aged 14 to 18, from 61 schools.

St George’s Art is considered a springboard for young artists, and with so many schools keen to participate, the number of artworks per school is limited to just three to ensure the highest quality from the State’s top young talent.

Catholic schools have a strong history at the exhibition, claiming the top prize for the past two years.

In 2018 overall winner Alexandra O’Brien from Iona Presentation College won praise for her “striking and powerful” work I’m all Ears (Oil on canvas). Judges said the piece shared the experience of deafness through a visual medium, achieving a beautiful and technically superb result despite the difficult task.

2018 overall winning piece, ‘I’m all Ears’ (Oil on canvas) by Iona Presentation College student Alexandra O’Brien.

“In my work, I wanted to comment on the common perception people have of deafness, which is often fed by misinformed media such as films or books,” Alexandra explained.

“I wanted to provoke some understanding and self-evaluation on behalf of the viewer into how they react to, and interact with, deaf people.

Santa Maria College’s Kimberley Lin won best overall in 2017 with H.M.N. (Oil).

“My painting aims to focus on people’s understanding of personal choices and attempting to achieve the seemingly impossible,” she wrote.

The overall winner will be awarded $500 and four category winners will receive $200 each.
