CEWA Footballers Shine in AFL Draft

The 2018 AFL Draft and Rookie Draft has seen rising stars from CEWA’s schools and colleges start on the path to their sporting careers.
Luke English from Mazenod College will head to the Richmond Tigers after being picked at 62, while Aquinas College students Jarrod Cameron (pick 39) and Tom Joyce (pick 40) claimed places at the West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Lions respectively (Jarrod’s brother Charlie plays for the Lions).
Damon Greaves from Prendiville Catholic College was Hawthorne’s first pick at 14 in the Rookie Draft, after missing out in the initial rounds.
“I am just stoked to be going to the Hawks and to be getting my opportunity,” Damon said.
“I was just so stoked and happy. Mum started yelling and hugging me. It was great.”
In addition to the draftees, Aquinas’ Jason Carter was picked by Fremantle for their Next Generation Academy, while Cameron was the West Coast NGA pick.
There is a strong tradition of AFL development at Aquinas College which has four students in the expanded Academy program.
In 2019 the AFL Academy Program will see 150 players engaged in high performance camps conducted across five talent regions and they will be eligible for the 2019 and 2020 draft.
The academies will come together for their first camp in WA in December with Peter Sumich as the coach.
Logan McDonald, Deven Robertson, Trey Ruscoe and Jeremy Sharp from Aquinas are in the squad and will be joined by Nicholas Martin from Trinity College.
