La Salle students discover robotic innovations of WA Police
29 August 2023
It was National Science Week with a difference at La Salle College in Middle Swan this year as students were given a rare insight into how the WA Police Tactical Response Unit is harnessing innovations in technology to make their work safer.
Members of the WA Police Bomb Squad and the WA Police Air Wing Unit who visited the college during Science Week showcased how robots are being used to defuse bombs as well as how technology is improving efficiencies and the capabilities of Police.
‘Being able to see firsthand all the latest tools WA Police use to improve the way they work in such high-level work like bomb defusing was eye-opening, and at the same time very cool,’ student Jude Ryan said.
‘My favourite was their use of the robotic dog. Every
year, our school hosts events that are inspiring and exciting. Can’t wait for next year.’
Leader of Learning – Science, Jordy Henderson said,
‘This year, our primary focus was to showcase innovation in a way that was relevant, exciting and inspiring.
‘Engaging with our local police made this possible. Many students were not aware of the technology used by WA Police, and I think after this visit a few will be eager to explore a possible future in the roles they offer.’
TRG bomb response unit senior sergeant Steve Taylor said that he enjoyed the opportunity spent with La Salle students to provide them with insights on how adapting the latest technology helps WA Police create a safer space for their roles.
‘There are currently seven bomb technicians in the WA Bomb Response Unit. When we are not in operations, we are training to maintain our skills.’
National Science Week, held for the 26th time this year, was themed Innovation: Powering Future Industries and featured more than 1000 events around the country from 12 to 20 August.
