Ryan’s tax rap profits from national competition

25 October 2019

Year 11 Nagle Catholic College Year student Ryan Carter has wowed a judging panel in the ATO’s Tax, Super + You competition.

Ryan was crowned National Senior Category winner after submitting a video in which he raps about the virtues of financial management.

With clever lyrics and the occasional floss, Ryan’s Tax and Super Rap is a lighthearted approach to educating peers about what many of them would consider a boring topic.

Go downtown, look around, there’s a playground and a light pole,

Next to a smooth road made out of gravel,

So you and the fam can safely travel – yeah.

These are just a few things that our tax provide,

Next time you have to pay them,

Just look at the good side.

Without tax we’d be lost,

There’s nothing worth more than it’s cost.

And super helps keep our future bright,

So when we’re older we can all unite, and

Have the money to help us survive.

Students Australia-wide from Years 7 to 12 were asked to develop creative products that highlight the value of tax and/or super in the community.

Ryan was short-listed from entries from all over Australia and interviewed by a judging panel including television personality and financial journalist David Koch, Sally Bektas (assistant commissioner marketing and communications, Australian Taxation Office), Alison Lendon (deputy commissioner individuals and intermediaries, Australian Taxation Office) and James O’Halloran (deputy commissioner superannuation and employer obligations, Australian Taxation Office).

The win came with a $400 prize for Ryan, plus $600 for his school; he will be formally honoured at an awards ceremony in Canberra on December 4.
