About one year ago, 60 Irene McCormack Catholic College students successfully auditioned for a role in the bright and energetic Broadway Musical, Hairspray. 

After months of planning, rehearsals, singing lessons, set designs and costume fittings, students were ready to share their hard work and talents with the College community, when performances had to be cancelled to COVID-19. 

While undoubtedly a disappointment for all involved that they could not put on the live show for guests, students had the chance to put their all into the final dress rehearsal ahead of the introduction of tight distancing restrictions, treating the performance like opening night.

The students’ positive attitude and commitment to the show, despite the setback, impressed the College’s Head of Performing Arts, Kylie Langdon, who said they set the stage alight with their positive energy and joy of performing.  

“Our students have risen to all challenges and we are all incredibly proud of them. The time, effort and dedication that the cast, musicians and dancers have put into the Production has been wonderful to witness,” Mrs Langdon said. 

Holy Cross College also made the necessary decision recently to postpone their 2020 production of Oliver Twist, which is now scheduled to take place in 2021. 

Learning Area Coordinator for The Arts at Holy Cross, Chris McRae, said that the College was committed to giving students exciting opportunities for enrichment this year, and had recently  announced they had secured the rights to The Monologue Show by Don Zolidis. 

The Monologue Show will be streaming online from its premiere on 27 June, which was due to be Oliver Twist‘s opening night. 

The show is a comedy revolving around an inept Drama teacher trying to keep a handle on his class, and will compile a series of performances filmed independently by each cast member, after rehearsing with remote learning support. 

The College will be providing streaming details to their community closer to the date.
