Celebrating an Olympic medal at Mater Christi

27 August 2021

Maddy Gibbs is a Year 6 teacher at Mater Christi Catholic Primary School, and her fianće Matt Dawson is an Australian Olympian, and now an Olympic medal winner.

Matt was part of the Australian Kookaburras hockey team, and while he was in Tokyo recently for the 2020 Olympics, Maddy made sure he kept her class up to speed on life at the games.

Year 6 C got video messages from Matt during the Olympics, and had the opportunity to talk with him on a video call during the Kookaburras’ campaign and ask questions about what it was like to compete on one of the world’s biggest sporting stages.

It wasn’t just the students who got behind Matt and the team, with the whole school community celebrating their efforts, culminating in a silver medal in their final against Belgium.
