Cross-sector collaboration celebrates teachers

CEWA worked with the public education sector, independent schools and universities on a first-of-its kind campaign celebrating teachers for World Teachers’ Day in 2021.
Acknowledging the vital work of teachers for WA communities, a video of appreciation was created by CEWA, the Department of Education, the Association of Independent Schools Western Australia, and Edith Cowan University.
Published widely online on Friday, 29 October, World Teachers’ Day in Australia, the video reflected on teachers’ ability to inspire, challenge, motivate, empower, create, nurture, adapt and respect. It aimed to showcase and raise the profile of their work, and thank them for their commitment to the vocation of teaching.
Each year, World Teachers’ Day is an opportunity for the community to celebrate the contribution teachers make for individual children and young people, and their contribution to the wellbeing of the population as a whole. The campaign was also created in recognition of the enormous resilience shown by teachers since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time which has seen them adapt quickly to a changing situation to ensure that students continue to receive a high standard of education.
CEWA schools featured in the video include Aranmore Catholic College, with students and teachers filmed working in the CEWA Virtual Schools Network (ViSN) project, Birlirr Ngawiyiwu School, Chisholm Catholic College, Mater Dei College, Notre Dame Catholic Primary School and Warlawurru Catholic School.
In addition to the collaborative video, students from Pre-Primary and Years 2, 5, 8 and 10 at Ursula Frayne Catholic College worked with former news reader Tina Altieri to record a radio thank you ad for CEWA teachers, which also aired on World Teachers’ Day.
Dr Debra Sayce, CEWA’s Executive Director, said it was exciting to be part of a cross-sectoral project that emphasised the positive impact of education, and teachers, for every student across WA.
“World Teachers’ Day reminds us of the demands of teaching in a rapidly changing education landscape,” she said.
“It is an opportunity to celebrate the fact that our Catholic school communities are enlivened by teachers who are passionate about their students’ learning. Every teacher has their own life and faith story that makes them special and their contribution unique.”
