Launch of the Kolbe Way Program
12 April 2023
In 2023 Kolbe Catholic College is introducing a contemporary rite of passage program to its Year 9 students. ‘The Kolbe Way’ Program or TKW, provides an opportunity for students to be guided by mentors, engage in conversation and become respectful, resilient and resourceful young people.
At the beginning of the year, the College’s Year 9 students participated the very first ‘The Kolbe Way Day’, which introduced students to what a rite of passage is, allowed them to share stories of their childhood and explore what type of adult they would like to be.
A highlight of the day was a presentation by Mrs Cheryl Lennox-Bradley, who shared her story as an aboriginal woman, the importance of culture and the value of community with students. She painted 14 message sticks, one for every TKW class. These message sticks will act as a symbol of unity and coming together as a community for each of the classes.
In Term 1 Kolbe’s Year 9 students and their families also came together to celebrate the opening of ‘The Kolbe Way Program’. Students were called to take their first steps to accepting the responsibilities of beginning adulthood as parents gave their blessing for their children to venture into this next step of their lives.
With the sun beginning to set at the Rockingham Foreshore upwards of 500 students, families and staff were introduced to the promise that ‘The Kolbe Way’ is a significant signpost on a student’s pathway from childhood to young adulthood. Students were advised that the road to adulthood is not always an easy one but were reassured that the path, although challenging at times, is an exciting journey and one that is fulfilling and joyous.
Kolbe Catholic College is proud of the development of this new and contemporary rite of passage program and the feedback from staff, students and families alike has been overwhelming.
“I never realised how much I was capable of until I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and took on this challenge. TKW has taught me a lot about myself and what I can do and I look forward to the rest of the year and all the valuable lessons we will carry with us for years to come.” said Year 9 student, Jack.
The Kolbe community joined in a prayer service led by students, staff and parents reflecting the shared commitment between the College and the families in the development of Courage, Faith and Excellence of our young people. Father Giovanni blessed the community and students who were being called to accept this challenge placed before them.
The evening concluded with a gathering of all TKW groups with their individual mentors. Staff mentors made a commitment to the groups and showed their appreciation to families for instilling trust in them to help guide their children. Students expressed their gratitude to their loved ones in the form of a handwritten letter. The Year 9s identified what they admire and appreciate in their parents/carers, and committed to adapting their behaviours to become a positive contributor to their family and wider community.
