Kalgoorlie wows with Wizard of Oz spectacle
15 June 2023
Kalgoorlie audiences were treated with an elaborate array of costumes, set and talent that filled the new John Paul College (JPC) Performing Arts Centre as Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion journeyed to the Land of Oz.
Seventy students made up the cast and crew of The Wizard of Oz musical held from 12 to 14 May.
JPC Principal Bradley Hall who had been keeping the school community informed leading up to show day said he was proud of all involved.
‘I had the immense pleasure of hosting the Wizard of Oz sponsors and seeing the production. The show was a delight to watch and appreciated by our sponsors and other members of the audience. Well done to Mrs Coulter, Cast, Crew and the many staff, parents, students and friends who played a part in putting all the pieces together. The new auditorium certainly enhanced the show with the amazing acoustics and state-of-the-art lighting.”
Musical Director Katherine Coulter delivered a speech at the end of the final show, expressing her gratitude to students and staff for their hard work – and spoke about potential plans.
‘As the curtain falls on the last performance of our wonderful production of the Wizard of Oz, the emotions are bittersweet. It is hard to hold back the tears. Tears of relief, excitement and sadness. The months of preparation and hard work, over in a weekend.
‘The hours of work put into a musical production is enormous, but the audiences’ reactions and compliments are what makes all the hours of demanding work worthwhile.
‘But as always in the Performing Arts space, we immediately move onto our next projects. For our Music students Esperance Music Festival and Youth on Health (YOH) Fest, for our Dance and Drama students. We hope you can attend and witness more of the magnificent work the John Paul College Performing Arts students get involved in.’
