Kolbe ignites young minds

Communicate! Be Creative! Collaborate! Think Critically! Show Character! Build Citizenship!

These were the six ‘capabilities’ in focus for Kolbe Catholic College’s first ‘IGNITE week.’ IGNITE is a programme designed to ‘ignite curiosity and passion by taking learning out of the classroom and into the real world. The aim of this program is to develop well-rounded students who embody the vision of the College.

In May, Year 7 students took part in the Kolbe Capabilities for Life event, answering the question of “How can we ensure there is enough for everyone?’

Working in committees, students were tasked with creating an information display board and building a model to represent their solution. This culminated in an expo for parents and special guests, where several students took part in panel interviews with esteemed guests, exploring questions around the capabilities. All the judges were impressed with the student’s ability to speak confidently about their solution and about the deep learning that occurred around these capabilities.

‘At first, we were all a little bit unsure how to tackle the problem but then we just worked together as a team to find a solution and design new products, like our model. It was nice making new friends and using teamwork to create new mindsets,’ Amelie said.

‘I loved creating our display board. We had different ideas for our model, but we managed to get them to fit perfectly together. I had so much fun working with my team, getting creative and expressing ourselves freely. Showing off our hard work to our families and special guests at the end of the week was great and we were all proud of our achievements,’ Tatiana said.

‘Thank you, teachers, for an amazing week and all the effort you put in! I loved the different workshops and I was so happy to make new friends and build different connections.’ Emaan said.

Feedback from parents, staff and special guests were positive and the Kolbe community are looking forward to making this an annual event.
