Dominican Sister visits St Pius X to observe Outpost support program

On Monday 28 August, St Pius X Catholic Primary School hosted Dominican Sister Thuy from the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Catherine of Siena, Saigon to observe the teaching of Australian students with a disability.
Sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of North Adelaide SA, Sister Thuy visited St Pius X for the day to observe how students with a disability are taught in a mainstream school. Sister Thuy is Principal of the Congregation’s school in Vietnam for children with a disability – particularly students with a hearing impairment.
St Pius X currently hosts a school support program for hearing impaired children called Outpost.
Run by Telethon Speech & Hearing (TSH), the Outpost program allows hearing impaired students to take a full and active part in mainstream school life. Students attend mainstream classes whilst receiving support and individual assistance.
Principal of St Pius X, Mr Daine Burnett, says it is an honour to host Sister Thuy and serve as an international observation site for teaching children with a disability.
“St Pius X has been supporting the Outpost program with Telethon Speech & Hearing since 2003 and currently has six students enrolled, all of whom are all exceptional students,” said Mr Burnett.
“We are honoured to have Sister Thuy visit our school and observe our teachings to help support the education and future of children with hearing loss.
