Whadjuk Gift brings together hundreds of CEWA primary students at Mater Dei College

Hundreds of students from six Catholic primary schools joined for a day of sports and cultural activities recently at the inaugural Whadjuk Gift event, hosted by Mater Dei College.

The Whadjuk Gift, a reconciliation initiative encouraging CEWA students to learn about and celebrate Aboriginal histories and cultures, was instigated by Mater Dei staff and relied on students of the College to organise in the lead up and coordinate on the day.

Students from Francis Jordan Catholic School, St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School, St John Paul II Catholic Primary School, Whitford Catholic Primary School and St Luke’s Catholic Primary School learnt about different Aboriginal nations and created tshirt designs with elements representing aspects of the culture of the nation they studied. Each design was placed onto a small-scale model tshirt, and placed together in the College’s garden where the event started with a Welcome to Country.
