Prendiville ovals named after sports star alumni

20 March 2019

Prendiville Catholic College recently welcomed sporting legends Matt Priddis and Michael Hussey back to familiar territory for its Prendi Summer Fest.

The family event brought the College community together for an evening of fun and to officially name the school ovals after the guests of honour.

Prendi Summer Fest included show rides and water slides, food trucks, over-sized foosball and hungry hippos games, a Year 9 DJ, silent disco with hundreds of students, staff, family and friends enjoying the festivities.

Michael Hussey, a decorated Australian cricketer and Prendiville class graduate of 1992, and Matt Priddis, West Coast Eagles player, Brownlow Medal winner and Prendiville class graduate of 2002, both shared fond memories of their time at the College and encouraged current students after unveiling plaques bearing their names.

The Husseys were one of the first families at the 32-year-old school.

“It was a really small community so we felt like a small team working together,” Michael said.

“There was no oval so we just made do with what we had… and that included dodging ticks and snakes on our runs through the bush.

“Mum and Dad impressed good values on all of us and my education at Prendiville taught me about having a good moral compass and good manners. I think these values are critical in a team setting where you need to be surrounded by good characters.”

Matt Priddis, who joined the College a decade later, said a highlight for him was the gym being built the year he started. He got involved in every sport and won the ACC Cross Country in Year 9.

“I just love competing – learning how to win and deal with loss, nerves and external pressures,” he said.

“Prendiville made me think about what I stand for as a person and the choices I make.

“The two most important values are respect, to treat people as you want to be treated, and humility, to always be humble.”
