A new postgraduate program from the University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA), developed in collaboration with Catholic Education Western Australia, will equip aspiring leaders with additional skills to further their career in the Catholic business and non-profit sectors.

Delivered through the University’s School of Business, the Graduate Certificate in Catholic Leadership will begin at the Fremantle Campus in Semester 1, 2017, and will provide leaders and aspiring leaders in Catholic organisations with a firm grounding in leadership and management principles, rooted in the Gospel mission and Catholic social teaching.

CEWA Executive Director, Dr Tim McDonald, said the Certificate opened up exciting opportunities for both aspiring and established leaders in Catholic education.

“Our leaders will benefit from the rich professional learning experiences presented by this Certificate,” he said.

“It can be completed in place of, or in addition to, CEWA’s current leadership accreditation, and will support and challenge our people to build their capacity, the capacity of our education system, and to strengthen relationships with the University and other Catholic organisations and service providers.”

Available as a part-time course, Certificate students will complete four units of study including Catholic Mission & Identity; Leadership & Management in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition; Leading Change in a Catholic Context; and Catholic Leadership in Action.

This will support career possibilities in areas including education, not-for-profit groups and charities, health care, social justice and diocesan roles.

CEWA and UNDA have worked collaboratively for many years to provide practical expressions of Catholic faith and values.

This new partnership embeds this relationship within a formal course, specifically focused on the impact that Catholic faith and values have on leadership towards the common good.

The course is unique as it is based on a strong collaboration between the School of Business and the School of Philosophy & Theology, to ensure the program is relevant and contemporary, embracing today’s rapidly changing global environment while maintaining academic rigour and nourishing the service-oriented mission of Catholic organisations.

Notre Dame Vice Chancellor Professor Celia Hammond said the introduction of the Catholic Leadership program was one way the University could prepare students ethically and spiritually for a vocation in Catholic organisations.

“Guided by the Catholic intellectual tradition that informs all courses offered at Notre Dame, the University is justifiably proud of developing business leaders that can make a lasting difference in today’s society,” she said.
