Year 3 Brighton Catholic Primary School student Isla Annear is among just 20 of her peers Statewide to be honoured with a NAIDOC Medal of Excellence.

The medals were handed out as part of an initiative to promote respect and harmony within school communities. 

It included a competition open to all primary and secondary school students, in conjunction with non-profit organisation, Koori Kids. 

Students submitted their creative entries across a number of categories, with the aim being to provide other children with a greater understanding of the importance of friendship and cultural diversity. 

Competitions are based broadly on each year’s national NAIDOC theme, with Isla recognised for her excellent poem on reconciliation. 

Isla received her medal from City of Wanneroo Mayor, Tracey Roberts, at a special ceremony at the school in front of staff, students and family. 

Brighton Aboriginal Teaching Assistant Bradley Barbuto said it was a great day for the school to be part of a celebration of Aboriginal culture. 

“It’s wonderful to see Isla write an amazing poem and be rewarded for her efforts,” he said. 

“Isla embodies the whole school by demonstrating that reconciliation is achievable.  

“When a non-Aboriginal student can write such a heartfelt poem for my people and my culture, it gives me great hope for the future.”
