COVID-19: CEWA schools to switch to remote learning

27 March 2020

In line with the latest education announcements by the State government, Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) is advising parents with children in all Catholic schools in Western Australia to keep their children at home from the close of school on Friday, 27 March, wherever possible.

All Catholic schools across the State have response plans which are now be enacted to provide for the continued delivery of education, through varying remote learning programs best suited to different school contexts.

Term 1 will now conclude for CEWA students on Friday, 3 April, with the exception of some schools in the Diocese of Broome that will be closing earlier.

Where parents or caregivers are currently working in health or essential services, students will be able to attend school until Thursday, 9 April, and out of school hours care currently available at Catholic schools for these students will also be available until this date.

The CEWA schools in the Kimberley region that will close from Friday, 27 March, are:

  • Christ the King School, Lombadina
  • Sacred Heart School, Beagle Bay
  • Luurnpa Catholic School, Balgo Hills
  • Ngalangangpum School, Warmun
  • Kururrungku Catholic Education Centre, Billiluna
  • John Pujajangka-Piyirn Catholic School, Mulan
  • Birlirr Ngawiyiwu School, Ringer Soak

The decision to close these schools early was made in consultation with relevant authorities and following feedback from Kimberley communities, and is based on their distance from major towns and service providers.

Catholic Education Western Australia remains focused on the safety and wellbeing of all students, staff and communities, and has reinforced that this decision is based on the best national medical advice and has been made to prioritise the health and wellbeing of the Western Australian community.
