St Joseph’s students take out Great Southern solar challenge
01 April 2020
A group of students from St Joseph’s College in Albany recently won the Year 8 category of Synergy’s Schools Solar Challenge for the Great Southern region, under unusual conditions for a solar vehicle event.
With the showdown moved indoors due to rain (prior to gathering size limitations for COVID-19), competing teams had to build electric cars and power them with solar-charged batteries.
St Joseph’s entered four teams of four students each, with two teams from Year 6 and two from Year 8.
The winning Year 8 team, Connor Bennett, Nina Giuntoli, Montana Wood and Will Crabtree, built a vehicle that out-paced those of teams from other schools across Albany, Denmark and Mt Barker.
Their efforts earned the College a trophy, while they personally took home gift vouchers.
