Lumen Christi College loan 3D printers for COVID-19 response

01 April 2020

Like many CEWA schools and colleges, Lumen Christi College provides students with opportunities to learn about 3D printing technology through hands-on experience.

The College was recently approached by a local company, Frontier 3D, to see if they had any 3D printers they could loan for the production of face shields for health care workers.

Lumen Christi staff were happy to help with the project, and loaned two of their printers to the cause.

With the company’s existing printers, plus those loaned from Lumen Christi as well as Willetton Senior High School, an output of 40 face shields per day can be produced – each one taking about two hours to print using Polylactic Acid (PLA) for the headpiece, which is fitted with a lasercut clear Polyethylene terephthalate (PETG) face shield.

The face shields, which can be thoroughly cleaned and reused, will be used by medical personnel to act as a barrier for droplet spread, and also help them to refrain from inadvertently touching their face.
