A number of CEWA schools and colleges have ongoing relationships with local aged care facilities, and showing care and kindness for older community members in these settings has long been an important Christian service activity for many students.

With the residents of aged care facilities particularly isolated in recent times due to COVID-19 response measures, CEWA school communities have kept them in mind and reached out to show their support in a safe way.

At Aranmore Catholic College, all students from Years 7 to 12, as well as the Intensive English Centre, spent a recent Pastoral period writing cards, letters and affirmations for residents of Rosewood Nursing Home.

The cards and letters were appreciated by their recipients, with the nursing home sending the College a message of thanks: 

“They have brought so much joy, laughter and happy tears to the Rosewood residents and staff. The residents are so appreciative of the thought and effort that the students have gone to. They are very much missing the weekly visits from the students, so the delivery certainly warmed their hearts!”

Whitford Catholic Primary School students also created cards, gifts and messages for residents at Mercyville Hostel, who they usually visit in person.

Crafting their gifts out of paper and cardboard, the students also learned about how long the coronavirus can live on surfaces and about quarantining goods for safe delivery.
