Mandurah student impresses with public-health message in art

22 May 2020

Alyssa Lewis, a Year 12 student at Mandurah Catholic College, was recently selected as one of the winners of a community art competition with a public health focus.

Alyssa’s entry, ‘Be a Frontline Hero’, was picked as one of six winners in the contest, which was run by local MP Zak Kirkup and open to artists up to the age of 25.

The inspiration behind ‘Be a Frontline Hero’ was drawn from the famous Rosie the Riveter campaign and propaganda posters of World War II,” Alyssa said.

“Through my work, I aimed to provide a modern twist on the widely known cultural icon, one that is reflective of the present circumstances faced within the health industry as a result of COVID19,

I think it’s really important that art within our community reflects the circumstances that we are all currently facing,” she said.

“Since the COVID19 outbreak is such a current issue, the competition encouraged us to be aware of the wider reaching effects of the pandemic and raised awareness of what we can do on a local scale to help protect our communities,”

Alyssa is currently studying Visual Art ATAR, and has been recognised for her work in the past, being selected as a winner for a self-portrait that was part of the 2019 Angelico Exhibition.

She is particularly interested in drawing people and is currently exploring portraiture using colour pencils for her final WACE piece for Year 12.
