Mater Christi students plant Bush Forever for World Environment Day

17 June 2020

Students and staff at Mater Christi Catholic Primary School marked World Environment Day recently with a tree planting project in partnership with their local council.

The City of Cockburn council donated a variety of native trees to plant in the Bush Forever area behind the school, and the City’s Environmental Education Officer, Vicky Hartill, shared a wealth of knowledge on the natural environment and coordinated the tree planting experience.

Students from Kindergarten to Year Six had the opportunity to get involved, working together on the planting and discussing ideas for caring for the natural environment and making positive changes.

“With the help of Ms Hartill, we were able to help our Earth by planting many new lush plants and scavenging for litter,” said Year Six student, Zabrina Pillay.

We mastered the art of planting and became more familiar with our Earth and the horrendous predicament we have put it in,”

The City of Cockburn acknowledged the value of the school’s ‘Small Hands Can Change the World’ initiative, presenting them with the book A Hollow is a Home by Abbie Mitchell, which was added to the school library.
