Childcare students create practical care packs

04 August 2020

Year 10 students in Emmanuel Catholic College’s Childcare and Development course recently finished putting together Pregnancy Care Packages, in a hands-on assessment task that benefited soon-to-be mums.

The project taught students about the practical demands of pregnancy, what items and supplies were useful for expecting mothers, as well as the value of thoughtful and creative hand-made gifts for one of life’s most significant experiences.

Due to the impact of COVID-19 precautions on classroom time in Term Two, students were asked to come up with items that could be made more quickly than the patchwork blankets, baby beanies and booties of previous years, and settled on packs including bath bombs, scrunchies, heat packs, breast feeding bracelets, burp cloths and macramé keyrings.

Accompanying the care packs were personally-designed cards with notes on how each item could be of benefit during pregnancy and beyond.

Some students opted to keep the pack for themselves in the future, while others have already taken the opportunity to gift them to people in their lives.

Grace, a student in the course, said that it was a special project for the class due to some news from their teacher.

“When we found out that our teacher was pregnant while we were doing the care packages, I knew that I wanted to give my package to her once complete,” Grace said.

“I thought it was perfect that she taught us about pregnancy while she was pregnant herself!”

Annelise, another student in the course, said:

“I was so excited to give my mum’s best friend her pregnancy package after just recently discovering she was pregnant – hopefully it will help her out during this exciting time!”

Other students gave the packs they created to aunties and cousins, making the assessment an engaging project that helped strengthen relationships and offer support.
