Luurnpa Catholic School celebrates Indigenous Literacy Day

10 September 2020

Students and staff at Luurnpa Catholic School in Wirrimanu Community, Balgo Hills, celebrated Indigenous Literacy Day on 2 September.

In addition to the school’s daily literacy routine, Community Elders Helen (Tjiliwa) Nagomara Napurrula and Marie Mudgedell Nakamarra visited to read stories to the students in Kukatja, one of the languages spoken in Balgo Hills.

The majority of students at Luurnpa Catholic School read, speak and write in Standard Australian English, in addition to other languages such as Kukatja and Aboriginal English.

Tom Vidot, a teacher at the school, said that improving literacy was an important goal, with students working with the support of school staff every day to become strong readers and writers.

“The children had a wonderful time with our guests, and really enjoyed Tjaatutju Yipi Ngayuku?, a story about a young goanna who had lost its mother,” Mr Vidot said.

“We are so grateful here at Luurnpa Catholic School that we have such strong Elders who can create these wonderful learning experiences for our children,”
